Why is it that when we practice pencil calligraphy in elementary school, hard-pen calligraphy in middle school, and now, we can’t do without the rice grid? That's because the rice grid seems to be "born for Chinese characters". From the strokes to the structure, it is very consistent with the way of writing Chinese characters. The horizontal line in the middle of the rice grid is called the horizontal center line, the vertical line in the middle is called the vertical center line, the diagonal line from the upper left corner to the lower right corner is called the right diagonal line, and the other one is called the left diagonal line.

So, how do we use auxiliary lines to practice calligraphy?

1. The vertical center line can be used as a reference when writing vertical strokes. The more important function is to check whether each word is symmetrical on the left and right and whether the center is stable.

2. The horizontal center line can be used as a reference when writing horizontal drawings and whether the upper and lower parts of the characters are arranged appropriately.

3. The right slash is mainly used as a reference for the direction of drawing and lifting;

4. The left slash is mainly used as a reference for the direction of drawing.

5. Looking at the entire rice grid, one square is divided into eight triangles, making it easier to see the start, line and end of each stroke, making it easier to practice writing.

The main purpose of the rice-shaped grid is to find the center of gravity of the structure. "Learning the basics of pointillism is short-term, and the structure needs to be built in the long term, so the rice grid will accompany us for a long time to learn. Below I have attached a rice grid calligraphy practice template.
